Overview
Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and it’s located at the end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, also known as Jing–Hang Grand Canal, the longest man-made waterway in the world. It is a vibrant and prosperous city known for its rich history, natural beauty, and booming manufacturing industry.
One of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization and ranking among the seven ancient capitals in China, Hangzhou stands out as the “Famous Town of Southeast China”. The place was founded about 2,200 years ago during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). The city was the capital of the Wuyue Kingdom in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period as well as the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the 13th century, Marco Polo lauded it as “one of the most charming and luxurious cities in the world”.
Today, Hangzhou covers an area of approximately 16,850 square kilometers and has a population of around 12.376 million inhabitants. The city has successfully positioned itself as a significant economic and technological center within the country.
Economic Profile
Hangzhou’s pillar industries are equipment manufacturing, electronic information, IT, pharmaceuticals, finance, textiles, and garments. Other specializations available are electronic appliances, machinery equipment for automobiles, construction materials, chemical fibers, biochemicals, refined chemicals, electronics, machinery, opto-electro-mechanical, bio-pharmaceuticals, and textiles fibers.
In 2022, Hangzhou’s GDP reached 1875.3 billion yuan ($272.62 billion), a year-on-year increase of 1.5%. This positioned the city as 9th in terms of GDP in China, representing more than 27% of the nation’s total.
The per capita GDP stood at 152,588 yuan, which is approximately equivalent to US$22,686 based on the annual exchange rate. Per capita income of urban and rural residents grew 3.1% and 5.8% respectively to 77,043 yuan and 45,13 yuan.
Hangzhou’s imports and exports amounted to 756.48 billion yuan, representing 16.2% of the province’s total. Notably, exports exceeded 500 billion yuan for the first time, reaching 514.1 billion yuan, accounting for 2.15% of the whole nation. As RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) entered into force in 2022, Hangzhou is anticipating more potential growth in the coming years.
Development Zones
Hangzhou has six major development zones, counting as follows:
- Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone (the HETDZ): The zone was approved as a state-level development zone in April 1993.
- Hangzhou High-Tech Zone (Binjiang): Established in 1990, the High-Tech Zone is one of the state-level hi-tech industrial zones of the first batch approved by the State Council.
- Xiaoshan Linjiang High-tech Industrial Development Zone: Founded in May 2003, and was upgraded to a State-level economic and technological development zone with the approval of the State Council in 2015.
- Xiaoshan Economic and Technological Development Zone (XETDZ): the zone was founded in May 1990, and was upgraded to a State-level economic and technological development zone with the approval of the State Council in 1993.
- Hangzhou Yuhang Economic and Technological Development Area: the zone was established in November 1993, and it was one of the provincial development zones.
- Fuyang Economic and Technological Development Zone: Established in November 1993, it was a provincial economic development zone.
